Kyoto: Gion or Near Kyoto Station — Where Should You Stay? (2026)

If Osaka is the city that keeps you moving and eating, Kyoto is the one that makes you want to slow down — every alley seems to hide an old temple, a shrine lined with row after row of vermillion torii gates, or a wooden machiya house still carrying the atmosphere of Japan's former imperial capital. Picking the right area to stay in matters just as much as deciding which temples to visit first.
Why Kyoto deserves an overnight stay, not just a day trip
Plenty of travelers base themselves in Osaka and train into Kyoto for a same-day visit, which is easy enough given the short distance. But staying overnight for a night or two reveals a different side of the city entirely — quiet early mornings before the crowds arrive, and the soft glow of lanterns through the old town's narrow lanes after dark.

Gion: stay close to the old town and its famous temples
Gion is known for its historic wooden houses and traditional teahouses, just minutes on foot from Yasaka Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera Temple. It's ideal if you want to wake up early and wander the small lanes before other visitors do. Accommodation here tends to be ryokan or traditional Japanese-style hotels, quiet and atmospheric, though prices run a little higher given the prime location.
Kyoto Station area: convenient transit and better value
If you'd rather prioritize easy access to temples further out of town, like Arashiyama Bamboo Grove or Fushimi Inari Shrine, staying near Kyoto Station makes more sense. It's the hub for every train line, including the Shinkansen and local lines, and rooms here are usually better value than in Gion — plus there are shopping malls and restaurants right at hand for when you get back after a long day out.

Kawaramachi-Shijo: shopping and evening eats
If you want a base close to both shopping streets and night-time food alleys, Kawaramachi-Shijo sits neatly between Gion and Kyoto Station. Nishiki Market, often called Kyoto's kitchen, is a short walk away, and come evening there are plenty of small bars and izakayas to wander between. It suits anyone who wants a mix of lively energy and old-town charm in one place.
Getting from Kansai Airport to Kyoto
Kyoto has no airport of its own — most visitors fly into Kansai International Airport, then take the Haruka limited express train straight to Kyoto Station, a ride of about 75-80 minutes. On a tighter budget, the regular train with one transfer takes longer but costs less. Coming from Osaka instead, it's just a 30-minute local train ride to Kyoto.
The best time to visit Kyoto
Cherry blossoms bloom across the city from late March into early April, while mid-November brings vivid red and orange autumn leaves, especially around Tofuku-ji Temple. Both are peak season, with heavy crowds and rooms selling out fast. For a quieter trip and lower room rates, consider visiting in early summer or winter instead — the weather is still pleasant and the temples are just as beautiful.
What to eat in Kyoto
Kyoto is known for kaiseki cuisine, plated with almost artistic precision, and yudofu — simmering hot tofu served with each restaurant's own dipping sauce. For something more casual, Nishiki Market offers a wide range of street food in one spot, and you can finish with genuine matcha sweets from long-standing local shops all over town, from matcha parfaits to matcha mochi.
Tips for getting a good room rate in Kyoto
If you're planning a trip during cherry blossom or autumn leaf season, book at least 3-4 months ahead — rooms here tend to sell out faster than in other Japanese cities. Compare prices between Gion and the Kyoto Station area first; sometimes staying near the station gets you a bigger room for the same price, with a short bus or train ride into the old town when you want it.
