If you've been to Japan before and found Tokyo and Osaka too crowded to enjoy properly, push your next trip further north to Hokkaido. The whole island runs cooler, snow sticks around for months at a time, and the pace of life visibly slows down the moment you step off the plane at Chitose Airport.

What makes Hokkaido different from the rest of Japan

The island is one of Japan's major farming and dairy regions, so fresh milk, cheese, and desserts made with local ingredients show up far more often here than elsewhere. The land is wide open but the population is concentrated in a handful of cities, so leaving town usually means snowfields or endless rice paddies stretching to the horizon — a sharp contrast to the packed skylines most people picture when they think of Japan.

How many days does a Hokkaido trip need

A lot of first-timers try to cram Sapporo, Otaru, Hakodate, and Furano into 4 days, and end up spending most of that time on trains instead of actually sightseeing. For a trip that doesn't feel rushed, 4-5 days for Sapporo and Otaru alone is about right. If you want to add Hakodate, stretch it to 6-7 days so you're not scrambling for an early train back.

Days one and two: based in Sapporo

Start with Odori Park in the city center, which changes theme with the seasons, the Nijo fish market for fresh seafood from early morning, and Susukino, the neighborhood with the densest mix of restaurants and places to stay. Nearly everything worth seeing downtown is within walking distance, so you can cover a full day without needing a long train ride.

Is Otaru worth half a day or a full day

Otaru is a short train ride from Sapporo. If music boxes and handmade glassware aren't really your thing, half a day is enough to walk the canal and browse the glass shops. But if you want to catch the canal lanterns at dusk — arguably the most photogenic moment the town has to offer — plan to stay until early evening before heading back, rather than rushing through at midday.

Is the train to Hakodate worth it on a short trip

The train from Sapporo to Hakodate takes several hours. On a 4-5 day trip, I'd honestly skip it — most of that time ends up going to the round trip rather than actual sightseeing. But with 6 days or more, Hakodate earns its place: the night view from the mountain overlooking the city is ranked among Japan's best, and the morning crab market tends to run noticeably cheaper than Sapporo's.

Snow season or summer — which is better

February is peak crowds for the Sapporo Snow Festival, with huge ice sculptures lining Odori Park. If you're not a fan of deep cold, July-August runs much cooler in Hokkaido than the rest of Japan — a good match for anyone who wants to escape the heat without dealing with heavy snow, and it also lines up with the lavender fields in bloom around Furano.

Getting from Chitose Airport into Sapporo

New Chitose Airport has a direct rapid train straight into downtown Sapporo, taking around 35-40 minutes with no transfers needed — convenient if you land and want to get to your hotel quickly. In winter, build in some extra buffer time, since heavy snowfall can occasionally throw the train schedule off.

Food you shouldn't skip in Hokkaido

Sapporo-style soup curry, plump crab from Nijo Market, a steaming bowl of miso ramen that tastes even better in the cold, and dairy-rich soft-serve that plenty of people rank as the best in Japan — all worth saving room for throughout the trip.

How this compares to a rainy-season Japan trip

If you've read our Kamakura-Hakone rainy season itinerary and felt like it involved too much rain, Hokkaido is far drier since it sits outside Japan's main monsoon track. It's a good match for anyone who wants to dodge the rain while still seeing a side of Japan beyond the usual Tokyo-Osaka loop.
